What are Static Residential (ISP) Proxies?

ISP proxies use IP addresses that are purchased from reputable ISPs but host them in datacenters instead of residential devices. As a result, you get the performance of a datacenter proxy but the apps and websites your visit recognize your IP address as a legitimate residential IP.

According to Proxyways' research, 99.8% of all ISP proxy connections are successful, and they are around 35% faster than residential proxy connections.

Static Residential ISP Proxies look like real residential proxies as the traffic from such proxies has residential ASNs from providers like Spectrum, AT&T, Comcast, and others. This means they can’t be ASN-banned because websites would also have to block millions of real customers if they did so.

The ASN of the IP address and the carrier that provides it can also improve the overall IP address fingerprint and make it harder for machine learning detection systems to identify these as proxies.

In the past, ISP proxies have also been referred to as static residential proxies because they provide a static residential IP address. In comparison, regular residential proxies have rotating.

Are Static ISP Proxies expensive?

ISP proxies tend to be more expensive than datacenter proxies. That’s because proxy providers need to pay extra for the ability to announce subnets from ISP ASNs (Networks) and premium bandwidth through ISP networks which tends to be more expensive than general datacenter infrastructure.

Comparing the price of ISP proxies and residential proxies is a bit more difficult because ISP proxies charge you for each IP address you use, and residential proxies charge you for the data you use.

Therefore, a residential proxy may be cheaper if you need a proxy with loads of IPs but don’t need loads of data. If you plan to engage in high-bandwidth web scraping, such as video scraping, image scraping, or crawling the web with javascript, using ISP proxies is typically the more budget-friendly option.

Does the quality of Static Residential ISP Proxies vary?

Not all ISP proxies are built the same, and their quality matters if you want to have a good user experience. Here are some of the main things you need to keep in mind when choosing an ISP proxy:

  • Dedicated or Shared IP addresses — Number of users some proxy providers allow multiple people to be using the same proxy at once. The more people using it, the worse the performance. That’s why Ping Proxies only offers dedicated ISP proxies that are limited to only one user.

What are the use-cases for Static ISP proxies?

Web scraping

ISP proxies are a great option for gathering open-source data quickly. Because they’re hosted in datacenters, ISP proxies tend to perform better than residential proxies in data-heavy activities, while also overcoming most proxy detection measures thanks to an ISP-provided IP address.

Online shopping

Limited drops and geo-restricted deals are becoming more and more common. This is especially prominent with sneakers and other fashion items. If you can’t access the sale or simply want to buy more than one pair of sneakers you like, a proxy might be able to help.

All you need to do is connect to a proxy server and start shopping. When using ISP proxies, when you reach the set limit of items you can buy, simply switch to another ISP proxy server. This will change your IP address and digital location, so you can continue shopping without issues.

Accessing geo-restricted content

Websites, streaming libraries, and even certain apps can be restricted to a specific region or country. Some countries with oppressive internet censorship laws also try to prevent their citizens from accessing free media by completely blocking most independent news sources.

  • Residential IP Address — ISP proxies are the only option for a static residential IP address. That’s because datacenter proxies don’t offer a residential IP, while residential proxies only offer rotating IPs;
  • High-bandwidth web scraping — ISP proxies are often the most cost-effective option when scraping large amounts of data. That’s because they’re not blocked nearly as frequently as datacenter proxies and offer unlimited bandwidth, unlike residential proxies.

The main reasons for choosing anything other than ISP proxies are needing a rotating IP address or accessing websites with the best security settings. ISP proxies host residential IP addresses on datacenters, making it hard, but not impossible, to detect that a user is connecting via a proxy.

Advanced proxy detection APIs like Akamai, IPQS, Datadome, or Kasada might be able to filter out and block some IPs linked to ISP proxies, just nowhere near as reliably as they do with datacenter proxies.
